Brown Ale Tasting

7 January 2000 - Brown Ales

This was our first scored beer tasting. This was an informal tasting and was not conducted blindly. Rockies Boulder Nut Brown Ale was the favorite followed closely by the Frederick Brewing Wild Goose Nut Brown Ale and Troeg' s Brown Ale. Several beers were of very poor quality including Jack's Brown Ale which was a gusher and tasted like an infected homebrew. Downtown Brown Ale also had a strong diacetyl flavor as well as other off flavors. Both representatives that came in clear glass bottles were skunky. Several beers had a pronounced sour flavor and 1 was lacking in body, tasting very watered down. The Canadian entry, Griffon Brown Ale, lacked any flavors usually associated with a brown ale and tasted more like a canadian lager with brown coloring added.
